In recollection of all the things that have come to pass over the past couple days (prom fiasco, Rape Dance), as well as the last few years (Flavor of Love, I love New York). And in coming across this site:
Coon Song These words popped into my head:
Ignorance. Immorality. Indolence. Deceit. Salaciousness.
Popular terms used when describing people who have a
"Coon" nature about themselves.The
definition of a Coon is:The Dictionary definition is Slang: Disparaging and Offensive. A black person. The unofficial definition used among black people is someone who acts like a buffoon or sellout, usually with stereotypical or over-the top antics, reminicient of minstrel shows.

This definition can be updated now to include all races, as it should have in the first place, because clearly ALL races are now able to display acts of buffoon-erisms even more readily than ever before through a plethora of media outlets, especially Youtube, MTV, and VH1.
Examples:
*Rock of Love with Brett Michaels
*Shot at Love with Tila Tequilla
*Flavor of Love with Flavor Flav
*Hell, any show that has the word love anywhere in it and in fact has NO CLUE abut what love is.
From the people who defined it to the people who it was once used to describe, I am too curious to know
why this extra derogatory term is the hottest trend since sliced bread?!?I mean, people used to loathe being viewed as a sellout, unintelligent, whorish, dishonest, and just useless human matter. But now, it is cool to shack up with someone, marriage is of no significance, lying and cheating to get ahead in the game is what's hot in the streets, how much ass and titty you can show is way more valuable than being smart, and being lazy and getting a quick dollar doing something extremely stupid gets you looked upon highly and favorably among your peers and counterparts.
When did we loose sight of the dreams and aspirations of our fore fathers and founders, and become the thing that they fought so hard for us not to be labeled as?And does anyone care to correct the problem?
Have we become alright with being/being represented by
Coon individuals?
I leave you with words from
The Coon Caricature. Uninsert any reference to Blacks/African Americans and insert the word person, since as we all know,
the word Coon is all encompassing of all races:
The coon caricature is one of the most insulting of all anti-Black caricatures. The name itself, an abbreviation of raccoon, is dehumanizing. As with Sambo, the coon was portrayed as a lazy, easily frightened, chronically idle, inarticulate, buffoon. The coon differed from the Sambo in subtle but important ways. Sambo was depicted as a perpetual child, not capable of living as an independent adult. The coon acted childish, but he was an adult; albeit a good-for-little adult. Sambo was portrayed as a loyal and contented servant. Indeed, Sambo was offered as a defense for slavery and segregation. How bad could these institutions have been, asked the racialists, if Blacks were contented, even happy, being servants? The coon, although he often worked as a servant, was not happy with his status. He was, simply, too lazy or too cynical to attempt to change his lowly position. Also, by the 1900s, Sambo was identified with older, docile Blacks who accepted Jim Crow laws and etiquette; whereas coons were increasingly identified with young, urban Blacks who disrespected Whites. Stated differently, the coon was a Sambo gone bad.

Lol@those shows. They are all a big mess. I watched rock of love and flav though *puts head down in shame* Lol. The tequila one was just stupid
The degradation of our community through media and culture is not something new. And it's implications are more far reaching than anyone could EVER know...after all, in most households...we don't watch tv, the tv watches us...raises our children...shows them how they are to act and make decisions regarding work, money, and even relationships. It's a downright shame.
Good post...very thoughtful....
I am not sure if it is as popular as it is easy. it seems evident to me by all the co-opted books and comics being transformed in to movies that there seems to be a serious crisis of creativity going on in our world. I remember when it used to take something creative or interesting to keep our attention. the truth is we as a group no longer require creativity or insight. we are just looking for an easy way to avoid our problems. and what is the easiest way to avoid our problems? that is easy being consumed by the dramedy of others.. personally, i try stay away from such things. reality tv is a lot like neighborhood gossip... its pointless but morbid curiosity usually wins over most folks who indulge in such things.. alright that is enough of my cents today.. piece and blessings..
